Saturday was a walk to the Abbot Point Port, including people of all ages from a child in a pram to elderly locals joining the Reefwalk for the day.
We were met by police and instructed that the walk was not permitted. We sang and celebrated the beauty of the wetlands. The police officer shared our concern for the reef, and was relaxed and supportive. However the Security officer – who probably called the police – appeared threatened by our presence and had no interest in the walk.
Sunday was a market stall, letting people know about the planned dredging of the Port and dumping of the spoil into the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
Monday we were on our way to Airlie. We walk from beauty spot to beauty spot, and I can hardly believe it is real.
