We spent a free day at Airlie Beach working with volunteers at Ecobarge marine clean up. 400Kg of litter found on one of the Whitsunday Islands last week required sorting and counting. It was shocking to see the waste that washes up on the shores of the beautiful islands – footwear, bleach bottles, drink bottles and oil containers, tyres, a toilet seat, sunblock and rope. Part of the work of Ecobarge is to analyse the material and identify the source. There is a mixture of waste from ships in the open seas, waste from craft in the Whitsunday area and waste washed down stormwater drains from the land. All of it must be reduced to save the lives of sea creatures.
